Your Ontario automobile insurance policy includes
disability benefits of up to $400 per week
if you are injured in an automobile
accident. You may increase the coverage to
$600, $800 or $1000 by paying an
additional premium. All income replacement
benefits are based on 80% of your net weekly
income. If you already have a separate
disability income plan in place, such as group
or individual income replacement insurance,
the automobile insurer takes the position as
secondary payer. In other words, if you already
have income replacement insurance that pays
the same, or a higher level of coverage, your
automobile disability benefit will not provide
top-up coverage.
If you don't already have an individual policy,
you should consider your options. Review your
disability income requirements and either
apply for an increased level of automobile
accident disability insurance, or better yet,
apply for a separate long-term disability
insurance policy. The latter approach will
provide you with full disability coverage, not
just disabilities as a result of an automobile
accident.
If you decide on the individual policy, we can
provide a variety of solutions.
